Cool Dogs

I rescued a human today.

Her eyes met mine as she walked down the corridor peering apprehensively into the kennels. I felt her need instantly and knew I had to help her. I wagged my tail, not too exuberantly, so she wouldn't be afraid.

As she stopped at my kennel I blocked her view from a little accident I had in the back of my cage. I didn't want her to know that I hadn't been walked today. Sometimes the shelter keepers get too busy and I didn't want her to think poorly of them.

As she read my kennel card I hoped that she wouldn't feel sad about my past. I only have the future to look forward to and want to make a difference in someone's life. She got down on her knees and made little kissy sounds at me. I shoved my shoulder and side of my head up against the bars to comfort her.

Gentle fingertips caressed my neck; she was desperate for companionship. A tear fell down her cheek and I raised my paw to assure her that all would be well.

Soon my kennel door opened and her smile was so bright that I instantly jumped into her arms. I would promise to keep her safe. I would promise to always be by her side. I would promise to do everything I could to see that radiant smile and sparkle in her eyes.

I was so fortunate that she came down my corridor. So many more are out there who haven't walked the corridors.  So many more to be saved. At least I could save one.

I rescued a human today.

  RECENT ADOPTIONS

Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket ADOPTED!!  Bonnie is a 1 year old female fawn english mastiff. She is spayed, up to date on shots and heartworm preventative. She is housebroken and kennel trained. Bonnie is very loving and is happiest when she is sitting with you on the couch, laying on you or putting her paw on your shoulder to give you a big hug. She will steal your heart within minutes of meeting her. Being still a pup... she does have lots of energy and still tends to chew if not watched and her attention redirected. She does not do well with small dogs but is great with larger dogs. She does great with small children (has lived with a 3 year old), but can knock them down and would do much better with older children to play with. Bonnie is in Houston, Texas. If you are interested in Bonnie, please fill out the adoption application.

Photobucket ADOPTED!!  Ali is a beautiful female brindle english mastiff under a year old. Loves to play and is very sweet and loves cuddling with you. Needs some obedience training, but very willing to learn. Very obvious she lived only outdoors, but she has never had an accident in the house and loves being inside in the A/C, on a soft bed with all her new toys. Ali has been spayed, is up to date on her shots and all other medical has been completed. Ali will only be adopted with her special needs companion, Bryce. If interested in Ali & Bryce, please complete an adoption application. All adoptions are to inside homes only. Thank you for considering a rescue!

Bryce ADOPTED!! Bryce is a wonderful 2 year old fawn male mastiff. He has been diagnosed with PRA (Progressive Retinal Atrophy) and will eventually be blind. There is nothing that can be done to stop the progression of this disease. He has also been neutered, as all rescues do, but in this case, it was especially important so as not to pass along the defective PRA genes, as all of his offspring would also eventually be blind. He came in with green goo covering his entire face from eye infections (along with every worm imaginable, coccidia, and severe ear and skin infections as did Ali). He needs eye drops every day and he has also been started on supplements to possibly slow down the progression of the PRA (although, of course, there is no medical evidence that these supplements work). Bryce is a very sweet, loving mastiff that wants nothing more than to be hugged on all day. He will only be adopted with Ali as he will need her when he loses his sight. And he really needs to find his forever home soon. There is no timeframe specified as to when he will completely lose his eyesight (his right eye has less sight than his left, and his left eye also has several cataracts), but he needs to be familiar with his surroundings for when he does. Not only will it take a very special person (or persons) to adopt a pair of mastiffs, but it will take an angel to take on a mastiff that will eventually be blind. Blind dogs do very well after losing their sight and Bryce will definitely be that way. I have started teaching him associative words (such as right, left, door, step) so that he will somewhat know what to expect when he hears this word. He loves to go for walks... and is great with every dog and person he meets. He does need some obedience training, but he learns quickly and listens very well. If there is someone out there that is looking for a wonderful pair of mastiffs to love... this is the pair! Please consider opening your heart and home to Bryce and Ali.  First step is the adoption application.  Thank you!

TIGGER IS ADOPTED!!  COURTESY POST - PLEASE CONTACT JANET FOR MORE INFORMATION ON TIGGER - -        I rescued Tigger almost 2 years ago. He is a Mastiff (probably Cane Corso) and Lab mix. He received his Rabies shot and boosters. He's been on Heartguard as long as I've had him. He is neutered. His tail and ears were never cropped. He had Happy Tail Syndrome as a puppy, but it has since healed. He does well on car rides, he was raised with other dogs including a chihuahua. He is excellent with my toddler and has never shown any signs of aggression. He will bark at the doorbell or when cars would pull up in our driveway. He usually calms at our saying it's OK. He loves to run outside and loved having his doggy door. Now that we have moved into an apartment with no yard and no place to walk, he is not happy. Playing chase, tug of war and chewing bones makes him extremely happy. He walks well on a leash and I've been easily able to pull a stroller and have him walk next to it many times. He has basic obedience and loves to please. He weighed 92 lbs at that last visit in May. The vet said he was as tall as he'll probably get, but may fill in a little more. He's never been a picky eater and lets me add kelp to his food. I've given him vitamins and brewers yeast and he takes them like treats. Of course, like any pup he lives for the occasional hot dog that falls off the grill. He is the perfect family dog!  If you are interested in Tigger, please fill out an application. The adoption fee is $125. If you have additional questions, please contact Janet at janet.fontenot@us.army.mil.

Senior Love

One by One, they pass by my cage, They say, "Too worn, too broken, too old of age. Way past his time, he can't run and play." Then they shake their heads and go on their way.

A little old man, arthritic and sore, It seems I am not wanted anymore. I once had a home, I once had a bed, A place that was warm, and where I was fed.

Now my muzzle is grey, and my eyes slowly fail. Who wants a dog so old and so frail? My family decided I didn't belong, I got in their way, my attitude was wrong.

Whatever excuse they made in their head, Can't justify how they left me for dead. Now I sit in this cage, where day after day, The younger dogs get adopted away.

When I had almost come to the end of my rope, You saw my face, and I finally had hope. You saw through the grey, and the legs bent with age, And felt I still had life beyond this cage.

You took me home, gave me food and a bed, And shared your own pillow with my poor tired head. We snuggle and play, and you talk to me low, You love me so dearly, you want me to know.

I may have lived most of my life with another, But you outshine them with a love so much stronger. And I promise to return all the love I can give, To you, my dear person, as long as I live.

I may be with you for a week, or for years. We will share many smiles, you will no doubt shed tears. And when the time comes that I must leave, I know you will cry and your heart, it will grieve.

And when I arrive at the Bridge, all brand new, My thoughts and my heart will still be with you. And I will brag to all who will hear, Of the person who made my last days so dear.

My Foster Dog by Unknown Author

My foster dog stinks to high heaven.  I don't know for sure what breed he is.  His eyes are blank and hard.  He won't let me pet him and growls when I reach for him.

He has ragged scars and crusty sores on his skin.  His nails are long and his teeth, which he showed me, are stained. I sigh.  I drove two hours for this.

I carefully maneuver him so that I can stuff him in the crate. Then I heft the crate and put it in the car. I am going home with my new foster dog.

At home I leave him in the crate till all the other dogs are in the yard. I get him out of the crate and ask him if he wants "outside." As I lead him to the door he hikes his leg on the wall and shows me his stained teeth again.

When we come in, he goes to the crate because that's the only safe place he sees. I offer him food but he won't eat it if I look at him, so I turn my back. When I come back, the food is gone.

I ask again about "outside." When we come back, I pat him before I let him in the crate; he jerks away and runs into the crate to show me his teeth.

The next day I decide I can't stand the stink any longer.  I lead him into the bath with cheese in my hands. His fear of me is not quite overcome by his longing for the cheese.  And well he should fear me, for I will give him a bath.

After an attempt or two to bail out he is defeated and stands there. I have bathed four legged bath squirters for more years than he has been alive. His only defense was a show of his stained teeth, that did not hold up to a face full of water.

As I wash him, it is almost as if I wash not only the stink and dirt away but also some of the hardness. His eyes look full of sadness now. And he looks completely pitiful as only a soap covered dog can.

I tell him that he will! feel better when he is cleaned. After the soap, the towels are not too bad, so he lets me rub him dry.

I take him outside. He runs for joy . . . the joy of not being in the tub and the joy of being clean.

I, the bath giver, am allowed to share the joy. He comes to me and lets me pet him.

One week later I have a vet bill. His skin is healing. He likes for me to pet him ( I think). I know what color he will be when his hair grows in.

I have found out he is terrified of other dogs, so I carefully introduce him to my mildest four legged brat. It doesn't go well.

Two weeks later a new vet bill for an infection, that was missed on the first visit. He plays with the other dogs.

Three weeks later his coat shines, he has gained weight.  He shows his clean teeth when his tongue lolls out after he plays chase in the yard with the gang.

His eyes are soft and filled with life. He loves hugs and likes to show off his tricks, if you have the cheese.

Someone called today and asked about him. They saw the picture I took the first week. They asked about his personality, his history, his breed. They asked if he was pretty. I asked them lots of questions.

I checked up on them.  I prayed.  I said yes.

When they saw him the first time they said he was the most beautiful dog they had ever seen.

Six months later, I got a call from his new family. He is wonderful, smart, well behaved, and very loving.

How could someone not want him?  I told them I didn't know.  He is beautiful.  They all are.
